Ducks to open 2008 season against Huskies
Oregon and Washington will meet to open the 2008 football season in an agreement finalized Tuesday.
The Ducks were originally scheduled to open against Boise State in Autzen Stadium on Aug. 30, 2008, then host the Huskies two weeks later. Those dates have now been reversed, with Washington in Eugene for the opener and the Broncos visiting on Sept. 13, 2008.
Oregon and Washington have met in a season opener once before, with the Huskies winning 20-6 in Seattle on Sept. 29, 1945.
Washington’s original schedule for next fall included 12 games in 12 weeks. The Huskies investigated a series of changes in order to add bye weeks, including moving the Oregon game. The Ducks negotiated the change with both Washington and Boise State and finalized new contracts Tuesday.
From Oregon’s end, the change would seem to be beneficial in that it provides an opener that could be extremely attractive for television.
Also on Tuesday, two all-America teams were announced, including one of the five major teams as recognized by the NCAA. That team, compiled by The Associated Press, includes Oregon junior Patrick Chung as a second-team safety.
Running back Jonathan Stewart and defensive end Nick Reed were third-team picks. Oregon State was not represented.
South Florida defensive end George Selvie, who will face the Ducks in the Sun Bowl, was a first-team selection. USF linebacker Ben Moffitt and cornerback Michael Jenkins were third-team picks.
Selvie was also a first-team pick on the all-America team released by SI.com Tuesday. Also on the first team was Oregon offensive lineman Max Unger, a junior.
Reed was named a second-team all-American by SI.com. Jonathan Stewart and quarterback Dennis Dixon received honorable mention from the Web site.
