Notebook Dixon unanimous player of the year; UCLA fires Dorrell
Oregon quarterback Dennis Dixon was a unanimous selection as Pacific-10 Conference offensive player of the year in a vote of the Pac-10's head football coaches, the conference announced Monday.
Nose tackle Sedrick Ellis of USC was chosen as the Pat Tillman defensive player of the year, quarterback Jake Locker of Washington was the freshman of the year, and Dennis Erickson of Arizona State the coach of the year.
Dixon, of San Leandro, Calif., was honored despite missing the final two games of the regular season (and much of a third game) with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, an injury suffered Nov. 3 against Arizona State.
Three players were on the first-team ballot of all 10 coaches: Ellis, center Alex Mack of California and junior tailback Jonathan Stewart of Oregon.
USC had the most first-team players (eight), followed by Oregon with five. Arizona and Arizona State had four each.
Oregon State had two first-team selections: offensive lineman Roy Schuening and defensive lineman Dorian Smith, both seniors.
In addition to Dixon and Jonathan Stewart, Oregon's first-team selections were offensive lineman Max Unger, defensive lineman Nick Reed and defensive back Patrick Chung, all juniors. Complete all-Pac-10 list in Scoreboard, B5.
Add honors: Tailback Matt Sieverson and linebacker Derrick Doggett of Oregon State and kicker Thomas Weber of Arizona State were chosen Pac-10 players of the week.
Sieverson and Doggett played key roles in Oregon State's 38-31 double-overtime win at Oregon in the Civil War. Sieverson, a senior from Bend, filled in for injured star tailback Yvenson Bernard and rushed 27 times for a career-high 142 yards, including a 38-yard touchdown run.
Doggett, a senior from San Diego, led Oregon State with a game- and career-high 18 tackles, 11 solo, including one tackle for loss. He intercepted a pass and returned it 28 yards for a touchdown.
Bronko Nagurski Trophy: Behind his 64 tackles and six sacks, Louisiana State defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey beat out Ohio State linebacker James Laurinaitis to win the trophy, awarded to the nation's top defensive player by the Charlotte (N.C.) Touchdown Club. LSU and Ohio State meet in the BCS championship game Jan. 7.
UCLA: Coach Karl Dorrell was fired, a day after the Bruins accepted a bowl bid and two days after a loss to cross-town rival USC. Dorrell, 43, a former UCLA player who previously had not held a head coaching job, had a 35-27 record.
The Bruins (6-6) will play Brigham Young (10-2) in the Las Vegas Bowl on Dec. 22. UCLA athletic director Dan Guerrero said Dorrell will decide whether he wants to coach that game and, if not, defensive coordinator DeWayne Walker will serve as interim coach.
Boise State's Chris Petersen, Texas Tech's Mike Leach and former NFL coach Steve Mariucci reportedly have been contacted by UCLA about the job, but Guerrero said that wasn't the case. Petersen, who is 23-2 in two seasons with the Broncos, denies having any interest in coaching the Pac-10 school.
